vertical cut (like a shear). In addition, the sec-
ond compression is more powerful than the
first one so the available cutting force is higher
and the loading area is bigger, among other
additional advantages. As the machine cannot
jam, it is always fed in a more efficient way and
productivity rates rise dramatically. The cutting
system allows different operating modes: dou-
ble cycle, preventing cutting, bulky scrap, etc.
Again, due to this cutting system, there are
some materials that can only be processed in
the Moros baler and that is a massive advan-
tage in a scrap yard processing heterogeneous
scrap.
PROBABLY THE BEST BALER
The top of the Moros range of balers is the
Moros GC-S-800, probably the best scrap
baler of its size in the market. As with all balers
in this range, this three-compression machine
includes the cutting system with the second
compression. The baler produces a
600x600xvariable mm bale size with a pressing
force of 800 tonnes and a shearing force (verti-
cal second compression) of approximately 700
tonnes. The average weight of a ferrous scrap
bale is 700-800 kg and the baler can handle 60
bales per hour assuming proper and continu-
ous feeding. Not many companies in the world
have the material and productivity to justify
installing such a machine.

Aurubis Olen has a rich history of more than
100 years at Olen in Belgium. The company
has undergone several name changes over the
years. It started as Compagnie Industrielle
Union in 1908 before becoming Métallurgie,
Union Minière and Umicore, leading to the
independent entity Cumerio in 2005. In 2009,
Cumerio was acquired by the German compa-
ny Norddeutsche Affinerie. The two companies
merged to form Aurubis. The Olen production
facility specialises in copper anodes, copper
cathodes, Aurubis rod, Aurubis foxrod and
bars and profiles. Aurubis Olen has invested
over the years to improve its processes and to
become a leading company in this business.
As Gert Veraghtert, engineering manager at
Aurubis Olen, explains here, there is a strong
relationship with Moros.

‘Our brand is growing fast, and we are
expanding and improving our processes,
including a new melting line. We are more
than happy with our present Moros baler. We
maintain Aurubis as a leading company in this
business.’
YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE MOROS
BALER SO WHY DID YOU CHOOSE
ANOTHER?
‘We take many variables into account into
making a decision but obviously the most
important is that we invested in a Moros baler
approximately 20 years ago and we succeed-
ed. We need a robust and reliable baler, and
we have been testing the Moros GC-S-800 for
those 20 years. Moreover, the technical differ-
ence that is a massive advantage when pro-
cessing different grades and shapes of copper
is the cutting system at the second compres-
sion. This allows us to process any scrap with-
out jamming, and this is the key for us.’
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT FROM MOROS?
‘The collaboration between companies has
been truly successful. We appreciate Moros’
flexibility and care for details. Engineers from
Aurubis have been in direct contact with
Moros’ technical department and the entire
project has been developed fluently. Moros
guarantees what we are looking for: quality.
Design, welding, machining, installation and
testing is all done by them, with little outsourc-
ing. On the other hand, another important
point is that Moros aftersales works very well
and we have also an engineering department
that cares about the machines.’
HOW HAS YOUR PROCESSING
IMPROVED WITH THESE MACHINES?
‘Because we process and melt the copper,
these balers ensure we process all the
materials we receive. We achieve the high
density bales we need to feed our processes
with the required productivity, efficiency and
reliability.’
