According to one of ISRI’s latest weekly
reports, only nickel prices are in positive
territory in London. Macquarie is report-
ed to be bearishly forecasting average
2020 prices of US$ 5600 per tonne for
copper, US$ 1803 per tonne for alumini-
um, US$ 2063 per tonne for zinc, US$
1725 per tonne for lead, and US$ 13

AURUBIS BLUES
It’s been a tough summer for Aurubis
which has scrapped its internal invest-
ment project Future Complex
Metallurgy (FCM). The company said
this was because it would have entailed
‘significantly higher investment costs
than initially planned’ and was no lon-
ger as cost-effective as expected.
Announced in 2017, FCM was intended
to allow an expansion of the company’s
raw material base, reduce throughput
times for precious metals and reduce
capacity bottlenecks at its Hamburg
site. Aurubis planned to invest around
EUR 320 million at the Hamburg and
Olen sites and create more than 180
jobs but the plans were vetoed on 12
June by its supervisory and executive
boards. At the same time, the supervi-
sory board released executive board
chairman Jürgen Schachler from his
duties with immediate effect, even
though his contract had been due to
expire at the end of that month. Deputy
chairman Roland Harings became chair-
man on 1 July.
Despite the setback, Aurubis intends to
become more of a ‘multi-metal recy-
cler’. In May, it agreed to take over
Metallo Group – a recycling and refining
company that specialises in recovering
non-ferrous metals from scrap with
lower metal content –for EUR 380 mil-
lion. The company has around 530
employees at locations in Belgium and
Spain. The transaction is subject to
approval by the relevant antitrust
