Japan 8.8 million tonnes (-0.4%) and
South Korea 6.0 million tonnes (-2.6%).
The EU totals for June were Germany
3.4 million tonnes (-5.8%), Italy 2.1 mil-
lion tonnes (-2.5%), France 1.3 million
tonnes (+3.4%) and Spain, 1.2 million
tonnes (+2.3%).
The US total of 7.3 million tonnes was
up 3.1% compared to June 2018 while
the Brazilian total was also down 3.1%
at 2.8 million tonnes. Turkey’s 2.7 mil-
lion tonnes was down 11.0% and
Ukraine’s 1.7 million tonnes was a fall
of 3.0%.

Additionally, In April 2019, world crude
steel production was 156.7 million
tonnes, a 6.4% increase on April 2018.
In May it was 162.7 million tonnes, up
5.4% on a year earlier.
COMPETING COMMODITIES
China’s iron ore imports in April fell to
an 18-month low following poor
weather in Brazil, supply disruption and
a mine accident. Imports totalled 80.77
million tonnes in April, down from
86.42 million tonnes in March and
82.92 million tonnes in April 2018,
according to Chinese Customs data.
Over the first quarter of 2019, China
imported 340.21 million tonnes of iron
ore, down 3.7% over the same period
a year before. Import volumes moved
back up in May to 83.75 million tonnes,
a 3.7% increase on April but 11% down
from May 2018.
In June, Australian iron ore imports
reached 75.18 million tonnes, down
from 83.24 million tonnes in June
2018.
Prices for iron ore reached were rela-
tively stable towards the end of April
and into May, at around US$ 93 per
tonne, according to Metal Bulletin’s re-
named 62% Fe Iron Ore index price,
published by Fastmarkets. But they
