SAILING TO THE HEART OF
THE PLASTIC WASTELAND
Kristine Berg embarked on a trip
across the Great Pacific Garbage
Patch with 13 other female scientists
last summer. She tells us all about her
rocky yet inspiring maiden voyage.
COUNTRY REPORT: US WEST COAST
Recycling International visited California-based
recycler CASS, which handles around 50 tonnes
of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap – mainly alu-
minium – every day. The company has plenty of
artistic flair too; CASS invested US$ 250 000 to
replace the fence around its site with a new
wall made from recycled materials.
MGG POLYMERS MAKES THE
MOST OF E-SCRAP PLASTICS
Upwards of 1.2 million tonnes of plas-
tics can be recovered from e-scrap in
Europe. One of the recyclers taking on
this large waste stream is Austrian
family business Müller-Guttenbrunn
Group.
