Fleming. SSI has shredding machinery
and integrated systems installed in all
seven continents and in over 65 coun-
tries. SSI’s shredders are used for vari-
ous purposes, such as hazardous
waste in Norway, waste-to-energy in
Costa Rica, paper pulp processing in
China, and even solid waste process-
ing at the South Pole.
INTO THE COLD
Ever heard of McMurdo station? It is a
US research station on the southern tip
of Ross Island in Antarctica. It is the
largest community on the continent,
SSI’s shredder-on-skis helps scientists in polar regions to shrink their scrap volumes.

with up to 3 500 residents, and is one
of three US Antarctic science facilities.
Obviously, the scientists and their
activities produce significant waste and
scrap which at some point has to be
properly processed. This is where SSI
Shredding Systems comes in.
SHREDDER ON SKIS
In an effort to increase efficiency and
reduce costs further, officials at
McMurdo Station contracted SSI for a
very special mobile industrial shred-
ding system. In 2012, SSI sent one of
it’s PRI-MAX shredders to the station.
The equipment can be moved on icy
and snowy surfaces thanks to iron skis
attached underneath.
PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH
All the equipment is designed and
developed in-house at SSI’s headquar-
ters in Wilsonville, Oregon, in the
northwest of the US. The company
has extensive experience in offering
shredding solutions at remote and
inaccessible places. ‘We get the calls
other companies say no to’, says
Fleming. ‘We have more than 35 years
of engineering know-how to fix these
kinds of complex jobs. We love to col-
laborate with customers and develop
tailor-made solutions to achieve
results.’
A TRUE FRONTRUNNER
As well as manufacturing everything
in-house, SSI also does on-site testing
and has a parts and service division.
SSI is a worldwide industry leader posi-
tion in the design and manufacture of
one-, two-, and four-shaft shredders
and systems, primary reducers and
transfer station compactors, to meet
the diverse needs of industrial, munici-
pal, and hazardous environments.
