PV Cycle & Veolia (France/Belgium)
To tackle the growing solar panel waste stream, trade organisa-
tion PV Cycle has entered into a partnership with Veolia to set up
the first PV recycling facility in France. The new recycling plant had an initial
processing capacity of 1 400 tonnes per year in 2017 and that had more
than doubled to 4 000 tonnes at the start of 2021. The site in Rousset, in
southern France, recovers almost 96% of materials.
Inzamelhelden (The Netherlands)
What’s more Dutch than a bicycle? Start-up company
Inzamelhelden (translation: collection heroes) builds on this tradi-
tional mode of transportation to deliver a door-to-door collection service,
including sorting recyclables into dedicated waste bins installed on the back
of its bikes. The service can be compared to popular food delivery options
but, rather than bring you a pizza, they take your plastic, paper & board,
glass and commingled waste. An app is used to schedule on-demand servic-
es.

Gjenge Makers (Kenya)
Materials engineer Nzambi Matee’s company
recycles plastic scrap and sand into low-cost
construction materials. She was one of the winners of the
Young Champions of the Earth prize, which is part of the
United Nations Environment Programme to engage young
people in tackling the world’s most pressing sustainability
challenges. Gjenge Makers creates bricks and tiles in vari-
ous colours (currently red, blue, brown and green) and
manhole covers. Mattee says her bricks hold up to five
times the weight of comparable concrete blocks.
