These are my final words before a fami-
ly summer break. In the morning, it’s
off to Spain where we’ll be exploring
the coast of Galicia and inland. Fingers
crossed.
Although I’m looking forward to the
break, I’m less certain this time about
getting to our destination. Travel can
be a disaster these days, as we’ve all
heard and seen on the news and, prob-
ably, unfortunately experienced our-
selves.
Airports have become places of com-
plete chaos and anarchy due to a lack
of handling staff. I know recyclers are
having trouble finding workers these
days but I dare say the situation is far
worse in the travel sector. On the way
to Barcelona in late May for the BIR
convention, I missed my plane because
of long queues at Amsterdam’s
Schiphol Airport. As I got to the gate, I
saw the aircraft taxiing to the runway
for take-off. How frustrating is that?
One week later, on the way to Munich
for the IFAT trade show, it was the
same story but this time the queues
were even longer. I had to wait more
than three hours in a 2.5 km line of
stressed, thirsty, and sweating people.
What a torture! This time, luckily, I’d
got to the airport much earlier to
ensure I wouldn’t miss another flight.
Our departure day is being called
Schiphol’s D-Day with experts saying it
will be one of the worst days of this
summer peak. Our plan is as follows:
our flight is scheduled 3pm so we’ll
have to be at the airport by 9 or 10am
to at least have a chance of catching
the plane.
If you’re going on holiday, too, enjoy
the break but be prepared for the
worst. If you’re staying at home (which
is probably a wise decision), enjoy that
too!
Either way, I hope you will be inspired
by this issue of Recycling International
which contains our second Top 100,
building on the success of last year’s
innovative list.
