AURUBIS PARTNERSHIP
Aurubis and manufacturer SMS group
have signed a supply contract for a sec-
ond plant module for the new recycling
plant at Richmond in the US state of
Georgia. The additional equipment will
increase the capacity from an annual 90
000 tonnes of complex metal scrap
materials to 180 000 tonnes. The core
SMS technology, a top-blown rotary
converter, processes complex recycling
materials to recover copper, nickel, tin,
precious metals and platinum group
metals. The overall project is costing
EUR 640 million and will result in the
first secondary smelter specialising in
multi-metal recycling in the US.
Groundbreaking for Aurubis Richmond
took place in mid-2022 and the first
stage of the plant is scheduled to go
online in the first half of 2024.
STENA FIRST
Stena Recycling Group has completed
construction of its first recycling facili-
ty for lithium-ion batteries, one of the
first at industry scale in Europe. The
new plant has an initial yearly recy-
cling capacity of 10 000 tonnes and
will handle material collected and pre-
treated in Stena Recycling’s existing
facilities and processes in Sweden,
Denmark, Poland, Finland, Norway,
Germany and in Italy.
Meanwhile, Recycler Recyclus has been
given final clearance by the regulatory
authorities to operate the first such
plant in the UK with the capacity to
recycle lithium-ion batteries on an
industrial scale. The company hopes the
Wolverhampton facility will mean an
increase in its battery recycling capacity
from an estimated 8 300 tonnes in the
first full year of operations to more than
41 000 tonnes by 2027.
ALUMINIUM
High grade was last listed at US$ 2
388.50 per tonne on the London
Metal Exchange, and alloy at US$ 2
007. Stocks in the warehouses of the
LME were 571 400 tonnes of high
grade and, unchanged, 1 920 tonnes
of alloy. Alloys in Europe fetch up to
US$ 3 760 for 226, US$ 3 850 for 231
and US$ 3 950 for 233.
On a dollar basis, scrap prices have
been noticeably higher than recently.
However, the relatively high value of the
US dollar against the Euro also plays a
role. In Euros, scrap remained more
moderate for the European market.
Extrusions scrap sold for approximate-
ly US$ 2 530 while mixed cast scrap
with iron attachments sold for approx-
imately US$ 1 804. Mixed turnings
retailed for US$ 1 177.
