(EUR 31.8 billion) in 2022 and is poised

RUSSIA
First issue of 2005: Russia’s younger
generation has recognised recycling
as a ‘rapidly developing sector of the
domestic economy’, according to
then 25-year-old Ildar Neverov of
Teplotov Resource in Moscow. He
joined his father’s business at the age
of 18 and later sat on BIR’s stainless
steel & special alloys committee
while also serving as ambassador for
Eastern Europe.
‘My relative youth is a benefit far
more than a barrier. Young people
bring a new style and rhythm to busi-
ness,’ Neverov argued even then.
Citing historically low scrap prices
across Russia and no export duties
before 1999, Neverov points out that
the scrap exporting business was
sometimes over 50% more profitable.
‘Running a recycling business in
Russia is a difficult business.’
Back then, Russian scrap players were
in the early phase of establishing
good contacts with those in neigh-
bouring countries, including Ukraine
and Kazakhstan. This now seems sur-
real given today’s political scenario.
