This was ArcelorMittal’s fourth acqui-
sition in the sector during 2022 and
ceo Geert Van Poelvoorde says: ‘We
have worked hard this year to secure
greater access to the input materials
we need for low-carbon emissions
steelmaking. Acquiring four specialist
scrap metal recyclers during the year
is a very positive development and
will play an important role in enhanc-
ing our ability to deliver low-carbon
emissions steel.’ The deals include
the acquisition of Riwald Recycling in
the Netherlands. Riwald Recycling
was founded in 1989 and operates
two fully certified scrap metal yards
in Almelo and Beverwijk, both of
which have direct port access. Riwald
processed over 330 000 tonnes of
ferrous scrap metal in 2021.
Canada-based American Iron & Metal
(AIM) has purchased a 50% stake in
Mexico-based scrap recycling firm
Kalischatarra (Kalisch Recycling) from
Hong Kong-based Chiho
Environmental Group. In reporting
the sale, Chiho set out how it inherit-
ed a challenging joint venture stake
in Kalischatarra in 2016 when it took
over Germany-based Scholz Holding.
Chiho says the relationship between
Scholz and the Kalisch family before
2016 ‘had been difficult and in a
deteriorating trend’.
It says it tried to improve the rela-
tionship with Kalisch Family but had
failed to deliver a viable solution to
continue the relationship. ‘There has
been strategic misalignment between
the seller [Chiho] and Kalisch family,’
it admits.
AIM is a family-owned, Canada-based
company founded in 1936 in
Montreal, Quebec. Kalischatarra is
reported to have 13 plants and sales
offices in the northern Mexican states
of Chihuahua and Sonora.
