I’m writing this in Kochi in India’s
southern state of Kerala, or ‘Keralam’
in the local language. ‘Alam’ means
‘the place where there is’, and ‘kera’ is
‘coconut’. Spot on, I would say: from
my room on the top floor of the
Holiday Inn, it’s palm trees as far as the
eye can see.
Obviously, I’m not here for coconuts.
The Material Recycling Association of
India has chosen Kochi to hold its 2023
international conference and last night
was the opening event: the MRAI
President’s Dinner at the Hotel Taj
Malabar. While the sun set in the
Arabian Sea, invitees headed to the
venue on a traditional boat along
Kochi’s backwaters. An evening of
great hospitality and fantastic, local
food to celebrate MRAI’s tenth annual
congress.
For Recycling International, too, 2023
will be a special year as the go-to
source of global recycling information
celebrates its 25th anniversary. Our
team is hugely proud of this milestone.
In 1998 Manfred Beck, Helga Fresen
and Jan-Willem Ypma stood at the cra-
dle of the first business magazine cov-
ering the broad and global recycling
sector. It took a lot of hard work to
win the hearts and minds of recyclers
worldwide. 25 years on, Recycling
International is still here, standing
strong both in print and online.
The 25th anniversary will be celebrated
throughout the year. One of the high-
lights will be a series of articles spot-
lighting our magazine subscribers in
the four corners of the world. We’ve
got readers in 120 countries on every
continent – from India (including
Kerala) to Indonesia and from France
to the Faroe Islands. So who are they?
And what challenges do they face in
running their business and operations?
A major highlight will be the May/June
issue which will be fully dedicated to
the anniversary. We will be celebrating
our industry and, of course, celebrating
the people and technology that makes
recycling happen. This special publica-
tion will contain interviews with new-
comers, the next generation recyclers,
and highlight best practice in recycling
solutions.
I seriously doubt if we will be able to
compete with MRAI’s celebration din-
ner party in Kochi but I promise we’ll
do very our best…
