Every year, Indonesia consumes seven million tonnes of plastics,
of which more than an estimated one million tonnes leaks into
the environment. Less than half of the country’s urban solid
waste is collected, not only threatening public health but also
the tourism and fishing sectors. The good news is that, step by
step, change is underway across the archipelago thanks to initia-
tives such as Stop Ocean Plastics (STOP). Since its launch in
2017, the organisation has provided waste management and
recycling services for more than 300 000 people, built five sort-
ing facilities and collected more than 40 000 tonnes of waste,
including more than 5 000 tonnes of plastics.
Recycling International travelled to Pasuruan, East Java to wit-
ness the efforts being made and met STOP’s Mike Webster
(left), Lintong Manik, Pak Suaibe, Fadila Hapsari and Mahesa
Adishakti. Read their story on pages 16-21.
