crisis, most businesses were able to
continue operations and more or less
survived. Short-time working was intro-
duced by 56% of the steel scrap firms.
Jobs were lost in 15% of the compa-
nies, says BDSV.
WORLDSTEEL ROUNDUP
The latest statistics from the World
Steel Association (worldsteel) show that
crude steel production in its 64 report-
ing countries rose 2.9% year-on-year in
September to 156.4 million tonnes. Of
that total, China produced 92.6 Million
tonnes of crude steel in September, up
10.9% year-on-year. For the first nine
months of 2020, China produced 781.6
million tonnes of steel, up 4.5% year-on-
year. In comparison, steel output year
to date is down in the EU (-17.9%),
North America (-18.2%), Japan (-19.1%),
and India (-16.5%).
The first half of 2020 brought a 10.7%
decline in the EU-28’s overseas ship-
ments to 9.776 million tonnes but it
nevertheless remained the world’s
leading steel scrap exporter during the
period under review, worldsteel report-
ed. There was a sharp fall in the
EU-28’s outbound shipments to India
(-50.5% to 563 000 tonnes) while those
to Norway werer also down (-9.2% to
168 000 tonnes). Conversely in the first
six months of 2020, there were
increased deliveries to Turkey (+2.6%
to 6.137 million tonnes); Egypt
(+14.1% to 969 000 tonnes); Pakistan
(+3.5% to 733 000 tonnes); and
Switzerland (+11.5% to 243 000
tonnes). Shipments to the USA were
unchanged on 311 000 tonnes.
The largest EU-28 steel scrap exporter
(according to extra-trade figures) was
the UK with a half-yearly shipment total
of 2.501 million tonnes (-25.2% when
