PUMA AND FIRST MILE TRANSFORM
BOTTLES
German sportswear brand Puma has launched a
footwear and apparel collection made from
83-100% recycled plastic in collaboration with
UK-based waste management and recycling com-
pany First Mile. The co-branded sustainable line
use recycled yarn manufactured from post-consum-
er plastic bottles.
‘The Puma and First Mile programme has diverted
about 40 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and
oceans, just for those products made for 2020. This
roughly translates into 1.9 million plastic bottles
being reused,’ says Stefan Seidel, head of corpo-
rate sustainability for Puma.

ways to reduce and recycle plastics.
TRULY CIRCULAR PVC
‘The last few years, we have worked
tirelessly to demonstrate how we can
improve the environmental impact of
sporting events by using materials
such as PVC,’ says Brigitte Dero,
VinylPlus general manager. The
organisation has provided recycled
PVC flooring for competitions staged
by the International School Sport
Federation. Other events include the
annual European Week of Sports and
World Yoga Day. VinylPlus also sup-
ports local sports initiatives driven by
communities, students and business-
es.
Dero hopes that such activities will
help put recycled PVC on the map. As
an added benefit, recycled PVC mats
and flooring are later donated to hos-

Per capital, Australia is the world’s
second-highest waste producer, with
the United States in first place.
According to non-profit Clean Up
Australia, every Australian accounts
for 690 kg of waste sent to landfill
every year. ‘The amount of waste
placed in landfill annually is enough to
cover the state of Victoria,’ says ceo
Terrie-Ann Johnson. ‘Plastic has
remained the most common category
of rubbish picked up on Clean Up
Australia Day (1 March) over the last
20 years. On average, it makes up
35% of all waste collected. Almost
17% of this represents plastic bags.’
Meanwhile, the Australia’s govern-
ment has announced it will host a
‘huge milestone’ as it represents over
92% of its 2020 recycling target. She
argues that recycled PVC ‘fits perfect-
ly’ within a circular economy.
