Respondents produced the gloomy
consensus that their business was
becoming ever tougher with compa-
nies increasingly affected by the weak-
ening national economy. Less scrap
was coming in and demand from steel
mills and foundries for scrap had fallen.
Two-thirds (66%) of steel recyclers
anticipated a further decline in busi-
ness in 2020 because of the battered
automotive industry and declining
orders within mechanical engineering.
UBS’ own survey of those in the US
steel sector survey indicated that,
although respondents expected hot
rolled coil prices to rise in the near
term, 57% of industry operators antici-
pated a decline in end-product demand
over the next three months, with only
19% being more optimistic. Moreover,
52% of respondents believed capacity
cuts were needed to trigger a sustain-
able steel price recovery.
US STEEl PRoDUCTion
More encouragingly, the Institute of
Scrap Recycling Industries reported
that steel production in the US got off
to a somewhat better start in early
2020. Based the latest figures from the
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI),
domestic raw steel production in the
first week of the year increased 2%
year-on-year while the capacity utilisa-
tion rate improved to 82% – it was
79.4% at the same time in 2019. Total
steel imports into the US during the
first 11 months were down 17.3% com-
pared to 2018 and finished steel
imports were down 18.1% year-on-year
according to preliminary figures from
AISI and the Census Bureau. The
Census Bureau also reported that con-
struction spending in the US improved
0.6% month-on-month in November
although during the first 11 months of
2019 spending was down 0.8% com-
pared to the same period in 2018.
