NOVELIS HEADS FOR COURT
Novelis says it will fight efforts by US
regulators to prevent the acquisition of
Aleris Corporation. The deal is due to
be closed 21 January 2020 but the
Department of Justice (DOJ) has
issued a lawsuit challenging Novelis,
arguing that the only relevant competi-
tion among automotive body sheet
providers is that among manufacturers
such as Novelis and Aleris. Novelis dis-
putes this, claiming DOJ has not con-
sidered competition from manufactur-
ers of steel automotive body sheet,
especially as this sheet is currently
used for nearly 90% of the market.
‘The day-to-day reality of the automo-
tive body sheet market is aluminium
automotive body sheet striving to take
share from steel, and the steel automo-
tive body sheet companies fighting
back,’ says Steve Fisher, president and
ceo of Novelis. ‘Our merger with
Aleris threatens no one and, to the
contrary, will strengthen our ability to
compete against steel, meet growing
customer demand for aluminium,
achieve our recycling goals, and bol-
ster our sustainability platform world-
wide.’
ALUMINIUM ACQUISITIONS
Alcoa has sold two aluminium plants in
Spain to the Swiss private equity group
Parter Capital Group. The deal,
announced at the end of July, was
effective immediately and concerned
facilities at Avilés and La Coruña. Alcoa
is reported to have been trying to sell
them since 2016. Parter Capital has
agreed to maintain the facilities’ entire
workforce of around 630 for at least
two years. Timothy Reyes, executive
vice-president and president of alumin-
ium at Alcoa, said the acquisition pro-
vided the workforce with continued
employment and the local community
with ongoing industrial activity.
