the country.
At the start of August, imported prices
of HMS I/II 80/20 were US$ 265-275
per tonne but week-on-week falls saw
prices decline to US$ 250-265 per
tonne by the end of the month, follow-
ing the trend of the weak Turkish mar-
ket. During September, prices moved
down still further with many in the mar-
ket not wanting to trade due to the
decline of the international markets.
Prices started the month at US$ 245-
260 per tonne for HMS I/II 80/20 but,
at the time of writing, had lowered fur-
ther to US$ 240-255 per tonne.

reflect lower demand. With the expec-
tation of prices falling further in line
with the global trend, September con-
tinued the descent with reports of US$
235 per tonne at the time of writing.
wORLd STEEL In nUMBERS
During July, the 64 countries reporting
to the World Steel Association pro-
duced 156.7 million tonnes of crude
steel, a 1.7% increase compared to
July 2018 but down from 159.0 million
tonnes the previous month.
China reported a 5.0% year-on-year
increase at 85.2 million tonnes while
India produced 9.2 million tonnes,
(1.7%+), Japan 8.4 million tonnes,
(-0.4%) and South Korea 6.0 million
tonnes, (-2.1%). The US produced 7.5
million tonnes of crude steel in July
2019, a year-on-year increase of 1.8%.
Brazil reported just 2.4 million tonnes,
a slump of 20.7% while Turkey pro-
duced 2.9 million tonnes, down 10.6%
year-on-year. Ukraine reported a dip of
1.7% of 1.8 million tonnes over the
same period.
