Schoolchildren across
Canada are being encour-
aged to recycle the packag-
ing from popular lunch
snack brands to redeem
cash for their school or char-
ity.
Specialist recycler
TerraCycle has launched
2019 Collection Craze recycling challenge in partner-
ship with the Schneiders Lunch Mate and Maple Leaf
Simply Lunch brands.
It runs for three months until the event of November
and is part of the ongoing Schneiders Lunch Mate
Recycling Program which is open to any individual,
family, school or community group. Participating
schools collect waste from their branded lunch kits
including plastic film, content packaging and plastic
trays and send them to TerraCycle.
For each piece of packaging sent in using a pre-paid
shipping label, participants earn points that can be
translated into charitable prizes or cash donations to
the school or charity of their choice. The total kitty is
US$ 3700 (EUR 3350) in redeemable TerraCycle points.
During the Collection Craze contest period, students,
teachers and their local community are encouraged to vote
for their school of choice daily during the promotion time-
line on the contest page. Each vote will earn one credit.
The contest will be judged based on the quantity of
recycled packaging collected and the number of credits
earned during the contest period. The top 10 schools
will win a share of the fund in TerraCycle points.
‘The Collection Craze offers schools a viable way to
divert waste from landfills, engage their communities
and be rewarded for their effort,’ explains Tom Szaky,
TerraCycle founder and ceo. ‘By participating, students
gain valuable knowledge about sustainability, how to
make a difference within their school and community
and how to protect the environment through recycling.’

If you’re in the business of recycling, chances are you are keeping an eye
out for new equipment and recycling solutions. However, the word ‘new’ is
relative. Machines in the recycling sector are known to be robust and ‘built
to last’. Online platform MyScrapMachine, estbablished this year, is there-
fore providing a digital marketplace for secondhand machinery. Not just for
the recycling sector – also for the demolition industry.
The platform went live in June and is already welcoming 25 000 visitors each
month. Around 500 machines are currently up for sale, and almost 30 have
been sold says MyScrapMachine manager Julien Jean. ‘Posting ads is totally
free,’ he adds. ‘We are targeting 4 major categories of equipment: shearing
presses, shredders, excavators and handling equipment. There are of course
other categories such as paper presses, waste, wheel loaders etc.’
The platform serves to connect buyers and sellers worldwide, Jean notes. ‘In
order to obtain a contact, the prospective buyer must create an account. This
is a way for us to verify his identity.’ The entrepreneur points out that the plat-
form is still evolving and so for the time being it will remain free to use. ‘Once
we gain more notoriety, sellers will have to pay for the ads they post online,’
Jean explains. Either via a monthly subscription for professional sellers or via a
one time payment for those only selling machines occasionally.

LEADING TECHNOLOGIES FOR WEEE
ANDRITZ’s innovative Cross-Flow
Shredder QZ breaks down different
composite materials quickly and gently
with rotating chains so that the individual
fractions are exposed and can easily
be sorted. Parts containing hazardous
substances are left intact, while
potentially harmful gases are collected
in compliance with WEEELABEX and
CENELEC requirements. This single-stage
process with high economic efficiency is
conducted in a fully encapsulated system
warranting high throughput and rapid
access to extremely clean fractions while
reducing costs for energy consumption and
maintenance. For more information please
