In June, after 18 months without any
business travel, I finally got on a plane
again. Slowly but surely the Covid
colours of the European map had shift-
ed from red to orange to green. The
pandemic was not yet over but some
restrictions were being lifted, one after
another.
Destination Venice. Or actually Piove di
Sacco, a 40 minute drive from Venice
airport. Not necessarily a holiday desti-
nation but certainly a nice small Veneto
town with a lovely church. Piove di
Sacco means something like ‘Rain in
the Bag’ – no idea why.
I had never heard of this place until
Mattia Molena, the communications
man at Panizzolo Recycling Systems,
invited me on a road trip to meet some
of their customers. Panizollo is head-
quartered in Piove.
I’ve been in Italy many times: for sum-
mer holidays with the family, a long
weekend in Rome, skiing in the
Dolomites. This was my first trip for
work and I enjoyed every second of it.
It was great to be on the road again
and Mattia was great company.
Summer had begun and people were
clearly happy to finally get out of that
long lockdown. From Padova to
Cagliari cafe terraces were heaving.
I met inspiring entrepreneurs and recy-
clers on the way. What’s more, I met
great hospitality. The report of my Italy
trip is on pages 16-27 of this issue. It’s
not about the delicious fish we ate dur-
ing lunch with recyclers Daniela and
Marco La Porta on the Adriatic Coast;
nor the superb spaghetti vongole at a
seaside Sardinian restaurant with
Federica Foterni of West Recycling; nor
the fantastic closing garden dinner
with the Panizzolo team.
But it certainly didn’t do any harm dur-
ing what was a revitalising visit. And I
sincerely hope the same optimism is
being felt in your own business, what-
ever it is and wherever you are.
