loaded mainly into barges or medium-sized coast-
ers, while bulk cargo ships are loaded at the group’s
own yards for deep-sea destinations.
The Van Dalen group opened an office in Istanbul
in order to enhance its shipping service to Turkey.
Major tonnages are also shipped to Asian countries
such as India, South Korea and China. The compa-
ny’s scrap can also find its way to the USA, to the
Middle East, as well as to Egypt and a few other
African countries with emerging electric arc fur-
nace-based steel industries.
New shredder installation
Van Dalen UK has its headquarters in
Chesterfield, near Sheffield, while its other sites are
located in South Shields, Durham, Hartlepool,
Immingham, Dagenham and Chatham. A new 1250
HP Metso Lindemann shredder has recently been
installed at the Dagenham facility and is due to
become operational some time this summer. The
shredder has an aggregate power of approaching
10 000 HP to give an annual production of around
500 000 tonnes. A large majority of the shredder’s
output will be exported, mainly to Turkey but also to
the Far East. Sales into Turkey will be handled by
Van Dalen Istanbul Metal Ve Maden Ticaret Ltd.
With this latest installation, the Van Dalen
Group now boasts five automobile shredders rang-
ing in size from 1250 to 2000 HP – three in The
Netherlands, one in Belgium and the one in the UK.
Substantial quay capacity
Employing some 360 personnel, the Van Dalen
group handles more than 1.3 million tonnes of fer-
rous scrap each year at its 17 yards, nearly all of
which have water access. The aggregate surface area
of these yards is well over 350 000 square metres,
including more than 1750 metres of quay length. The
yards in The Netherlands are located at: Moerdijk,
Hendrik Ido Ambacht, The Hague, Middelburg and
Nieuwerkerk (Rotterdam) in the west of the country;
and at Nijmegen (two facilities), Veenendaal and
Doetinchem in the east. The group’s yard in Belgium
is at Geel in the north east of the country.
Besides the five Metso Lindemann shredders, the
group operates 10 hydraulic guillotine shears and a
number of large, crane-mounted shears with average
cutting forces of 1000 tonnes. To feed its scrap pro-
cessing machines and to load ships and other means
of transport, the company boasts some 25 travelling
or fixed loading and trans-shipment cranes. As a
result, sea vessels such as coasters and ocean-going
bulk cargo ships can be loaded at most of the Van
Dalen yards where loading capacities vary between
3000 tonnes and more than 10 000 tonnes per day.
