Lost in Translation
A virile, middle-aged Italian gentleman named
Guido manages to attract a spectacular young
blonde. Things progress to the point where he
invites her back to his apartment and, they retire
to his bedroom. After prolonged and strenuous
love-making, he turns to her and asks with a
smile: ‘So, you finish?’ She pauses for a second,
frowns and replies: ‘No.’
Surprised, Guido pulls her close to him and the
passion recommences. The same happens again.
Stunned but determined to prove his stamina,
he pulls her close to him and they make
spectacular love once again. Absolutely
shattered by now, Guido is barely able to turn
his head and gasp with a proud smile on his
face: ‘You finish?’ ’No,’ she whispers, also barely
able to speak. ‘I’m Swedish.’

In 2009, around a quarter of the municipal waste
treated in the EU-27 was recycled, according to new
figures from the Eurostat statistical office.
On average, 513 kg of municipal waste was gener-
ated per person across the EU although the figure
varied from 316 kg in the Czech Republic and Poland
to 833 kg in Denmark. Throughout the 27 member
states, an average of 504 kg per person of municipal
waste was treated in 2009, with 38% going to land-
fill, 20% to incineration and 18% to composting,
while 24% was recycled.
Recycling accounted for 48% of waste treated in Ger-
many during 2009, well ahead of its nearest challeng-
ers Belgium and Sweden (both on 36%), Slovenia and
Denmark (both on 34%), and Ireland and the Nether-
lands (both on 32%). Meanwhile, the EU member
states with the highest municipal waste composting
rates were Austria (40%), Italy (32%), the Netherlands
(28%), Spain and Belgium (both 24%), and Luxem-
bourg (20%).
In 2009, recycling and composting accounted for 70%
of the waste treated in Austria, as well as for 66% in
Germany, 61% in the Netherlands, 60% in Belgium
and 50% in Sweden. In seven other member states,
however, less than 10% of municipal waste was recy-
cled or composted.
According to Eurostat, 100% of the municipal waste
treated in Bulgaria was landfilled in 2009, closely followed
by Romania on 99%, Malta on 96%, Lithuania on 95%
and Latvia on 92%. The highest rates of municipal waste
incineration were observed in Sweden (49% of waste
treated), Denmark (48%), the Netherlands (39%),
Luxembourg (36%), Belgium (35%), and Germany and
France (both 34%). ec.europa.eu/eurostat

US manufacturer Machinex Industries Inc. has
stood proudly alongside representatives of Cory Envi-
ronmental and the Western Riverside Waste Authority
at the opening of the Western Riverside Materials Recy-
cling Facility (MRF) in London by Her Royal Highness,
The Princess Royal.
The £25 million MRF will process over 84 000 tonnes
of dry recyclables per year from the Western Riverside
Waste Authority area, which incorporates the London
Boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham, Lambeth, Wand-
sworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
‘The opening of the MRF is an important step for Cory’s
operations in London,’ says CEO Peter Gerstrom. ‘The
MRF will have a very significant impact on our abilities
to recycle great volumes of waste going forward.’
For more than 30 years, Machinex has been building
MRFs in Canada, the USA and northern Europe. Cory
Environmental turned to Machinex to handle the design
and construction of what is described as one of the
most automated MRFs in the world. According to Pierre
Paré, President of Machinex, the plant was very sig-
nificant for the company. ‘We have a number of sorting
projects in America and are very pleased to have devel-
oped this facility,’ he comments. ‘It was a challenge
because of the size of the building and we partly use
gravity on the four levels for the process. There are 14
Pellenc optical sorting machines.’
The facility contains over 100 fast-moving conveyor
belts and an array of hi-tech devices – including optical
sorters and magnets – that allow the recyclables to be
separated into a range of commodities. Material is fed
into the sorting system via a crane and grapple unit
which is claimed to be unique for a MRF.
