SMS Siemag commissions Russian melt-shop

Germany / Russia – SMS Siemag of Germany has successfully commissioned a new electric arc furnace (EAF) melt-shop at the Pervouralsk Novo Trubny Works of Russian pipe producer, the ChelPipe Group.

Known as Iron Ozone 32, the new melt-shop will provide plants within the ChelPipe Group with high-quality round billets that comply with all standards and requirements for seamless pipe production. According to Alexander Fyodorov, CEO of ChelPipe, the shop will have an annual billet production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes.


The product range will include carbon steels specifically for the production of tubes for use in the oil and natural gas industry. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin participated in the ceremony to mark the commencement of the first stage of the project, which included the launch of the 120-tonne EAF with state-of-the-art ARCCESS technology as well as of the 120-tonne ladle furnace.
January this year brought the commissioning of SMS Concast’s five-strand billet caster which has an annual production capacity of 660 000 tonnes. The first ladle was used to produce 220 mm round sections.
