Junked cars for charity

United Kingdom – UK social welfare charity Recycling Lives, which has its own recycling operations, has launched a project that allows car owners to donate unwanted vehicles to a charity of their choice.

Car owners can arrange a collection free of charge by accessing the Car Donation Network website. Cars donated to the scheme are resold or scrapped to get the best price and all the profits are donated to a charity of the owner’€™s choice.

Recycling Lives offers homeless and unemployed people accommodation, training, work experience and employment opportunities. Its founder, Steve Jackson, said: ‘€˜We really hope that, when the time comes for people to get rid of their old car, they’€™ll think about what a difference it could make to a charity and use Car Donation Network to make that difference.’€™

The organisation, based at Preston in north-west England, began life more than 40 years ago as a scrap metal merchant and has become one of the leading recyclers in the region.
