Direct reduction plant first for Pakistan

Pakistan – Saudi Arabia’s Al-Tuwairqi Holding has started up a new MIDREX® MEGAMOD® direct reduction plant at Tuwairqi Steel Mills in Karachi, Pakistan. According to the company, it is the first plant of its kind to be installed in the country.

The new plant has a capacity of 1.28 million tonnes per year and the capability to produce hot direct reduced iron and cold direct reduced iron simultaneously. In the future, the facility will also be able to produce hot briquetted iron.

Al-Tuwairqi owns and operates two additional MIDREX® facilities at Direct Reduction Iron Factory adjacent to its Al-Ittefaq Steel Factory in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The company acquired these two plants – originally located in Scotland – from Corus in 2004; each has a production capacity of 400 000 tonnes per year.
