Almost 22% growth in US ferrous scrap exports

Global – Bangladesh has overtaken India and Pakistan to claim fifth place in the latest league table of US ferrous scrap export destinations after taking delivery of 508 183 tonnes in the opening three quarters of 2017 for a year-on-year increase of 124.4%. India’€™s purchases dropped 26.2% to 507 498 tonnes while Pakistan upped its order by 79% to 468 665 tonnes, according to US Census Bureau and International Trade Commission statistics.

Turkey bought more than twice as much exported US ferrous scrap than any other nation in the first nine months of this year, with its total of 2.567 million tonnes outstripping the January-September 2016 figure of 2.273 million tonnes by 12.9%. The next three leading outlets for US material were: Mexico (+20% to 1.271 million tonnes); Taiwan (+9.2% to 999 619 tonnes); and China (+164.4% to 531 557 tonnes). Apart from India, the only other significant buyer of US ferrous scrap to cut its purchases was South Korea (-59.5% year on year to 269 166 tonnes).

To all destinations, US exporters shipped a total of 9.733 million tonnes in the first three quarters of 2017 for a gain of 21.7% over the 8 million tonnes dispatched in January-September 2016.
