Thanksgiving spirit: hundreds of refurbished electronics donated

The Toronto-based ElectronicRecycling Association (ERA) is donating technology worth CA$ 180 000 (EUR 120000) to needy households in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

More than 550 laptops, computers, printers and mobile phones have been refurbished by the ERA to be passed on to Canadian families to celebrate the GivingTuesday event on 27 November.

The non-profit organisation organises such a recycling event annually for Thanksgiving and 50% more electronics are being donated this year compared to 2017. ERA started the event six years ago and aims to increase the number of refurbished items again in 2019.

The special day is intended to foster understanding of sustainability and recycling while also ‘amplifying small acts of kindness’. The association argues: ‘We have two days that are good for the economy – Thanksgiving and Black Friday (with sales totalling around CA$ 19 billion last year). Now we have a day that is good for the community too.’
