A EUR 25 million electronics recycling facility operated by Enviroserve is about to open for business in Dubai. Ahead of the official launch on 20 March, Recycling International was given a sneak preview. A special guest of honour was His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
The Recycling Hub is located in Dubai’s Industrial City, alongside the new Dubai World Central Airport and just a few kilometres down the road from what will be the site for Expo 2020. It is a booming part of Dubai that lies south of the Jebel Ali Free Zone and borders the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Broad e-scrap service
The 26 000 m2 plant is capable of processing up to 40 000 tonnes of e-scrap per year. ‘It is a game-changing facility for the recycling of all kinds of electronic scrap,’ says Enviroserve’s ceo Stuart Fleming. ‘It houses state-of-the-art technology and equipment and there is special section dedicated to repair and data destruction.’
As well as electronics, Enviroserve will handle specialised scrap such as aerosol cans and refridgerant gases. Claimed to be a first for the Gulf region, it will also process toner cartridges. Enviroserve has built the facility in partnership with Immark Technology of Switzerland.
A true hub
The UAE is, of course, a major source of electronic scrap for the facility. ‘More importantly’, says Fleming, ‘is that we link it to Africa in the south and the Caucasus in the north. This plant will definitely boost Dubai’s efforts to become a major hub for e-scrap. That’s why we call it The Recycling Hub.’
