USA – Republic Services, Inc. has started up what it calls ‘the world’s largest material recovery facility (MRF)’ at the Newby Island Resource Recovery Park near San José in California, USA. The 110 tonnes-per-hour multi-stream system, which has been designed, manufactured and installed by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), processes all commercial waste generated in San José and recovers more than 80% of the material under a 15-year contract with the city.
In addition to serving more than 8000 San José businesses, the system also processes recyclables from 85 000 households and has the capacity to process 420 000 tonnes of material per year, comprising four streams: organ¬ics; commercial dry waste; commercial single stream; and residential single stream. The system also includes a glass clean-up system and a shared container line with seven optical sorting units.
