Global – Steelmaker Gerdau has won recognition at the World Steel Association’s fifth Steelie Awards for improving the sustainability of its scrap supply chain. The Brazil-based group won the ‘Excellence in Sustainability’ category – one of seven awards presented at the recent ceremony in Moscow.
In the ‘Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment’ category, Tata Steel Europe took first prize for use of the technique to demonstrate the benefits of steel in bridge designs versus alternative materials. ‘The Steelie Awards recognise member companies or individuals for their contribution to the steel industry over a one-year period in a series of categories impacting the steel industry,’ explains WSA’s director general Edwin Basson. ‘The areas covered range from communications, technology and education to environment – all areas that are vital for the industry to remain sustainable.’
