Family business Re-Gen won Team of the Year Award at the annual National Recycling Awards in London. The company began its journey in Newry, Northern Ireland, in 2004 as an integrated recycling and waste management company and currently operates a materials recovery facility and waste-to-fuel production facility.
With 20 categories, the awards cover every aspect of the industry, from Recycling Excellence to Local Authority Success. Re-Gen was praised for putting safety first.
‘I’m extremely proud of the Health and Safety Team. It is a small team making a real difference,’ says Joseph Doherty, managing director at Re-Gen. ‘Representing the unsung heroes of the sector, the team has reduced our accident rate, supports the wider industry, and has set a benchmark from which others can learn and replicate.’
Doherty emphasises the need to invest in staff training while introducing innovative systems to ensure optimum safety and efficiency.
‘How the UK deals with its resources is one of the most pressing issues of our age,’ comments Corin Williams, editor of MRW which stages the awards. ‘The winners have all demonstrated their ingenuity and effectiveness in preventing waste and reusing or recycling materials.
‘If we want to reach our net-zero targets, develop more secure supply chains and take care of our environment, we should take note of these winners. They are leading the way.’
