Russia – With only a few months to go until the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Russian host city of Sochi is taking the issue of waste management and recycling very seriously – with a helping hand from Swedish baler manufacturer Presona.
The company is to deliver six LP series balers to Sochi, Presona’s sales & marketing manager Ulla Jacobson told ‘Recycling International’ at the UK’s RWM trade show, held last week in Birmingham. The manufacturer chose the exhibition to unveil its latest in pre-press baling technology: the LP 85V8 delivering 85 tonnes of press force.
Taking place on February 7-23 next year, the Winter Olympics will attract thousands of athletes and visitors to Sochi – all of whom combined will generate a considerable volume of waste. ‘As the eyes of the world are focused on Sochi, the hosts have to show they are taking good care of all that waste,’ Jacobson pointed out.
The six Presona balers will be used to bale recyclables such as PET bottles, plastic boxes and paper. After the Games, the machines will continue to be used in waste management operations, according to Jacobson. For Sochi, the Games are ‘a good starting point from where recycling can be developed into long-term sustainable solutions’, she says.
