Metso Outotec has signed a EUR 360 million deal for the design and engineering of a copper smelter complex to be built in East Java, Indonesia. The project owner is PT Freeport Indonesia, and PT Chiyoda International Indonesia is the contractor.
Metso Outotec’s scope of delivery is based on the licensed, ‘well-proven’ Metso Outotec Flash Smelting Process claimed to be of the world’s most commonly used processes for the production of primary copper and nickel. The process is based on the company’s flash smelting principle, which uses the internal energy of the feed material for smelting, minimizing the need for external fuel and making the process energy efficient. To date, Metso Outotec has delivered 51 copper flash smelters worldwide.
The mega order in Indonesia includes the design and supply of key process equipment and process control systems for the main areas of the smelter complex, the copper electrolytic refinery, the gas cleaning and sulphuric acid plant, the slag concentrator, and the effluent treatment plant.
Metso Outotec has previously provided certain front-end engineering design (FEED) and other advance engineering services for this 1.7 million tonnes copper concentrate smelter complex. Commissioning of the new smelter project is scheduled in 2024.
‘Our joint efforts with Freeport Indonesia and Chiyoda will set a new standard for the copper smelter industry in fulfilling the strictest international environmental standards and efficiency requirements. We are very happy to work together to implement this game changing copper smelter,’ comments Metso Outotec’s president & ceo Pekka Vauramo.
