Management changes at Sims as Claro departs

Global – Global metals and e-scrap recycler Sims Metal Management (SMM), which operates more than 200 facilities across 20 countries, has confirmed the departure of managing director & group ceo Galdino Claro and the appointment of Alistair Field as his successor. Group cfo Fred Knechtel has also left the business.

Field joined SMM in October 2015 as managing director of Australia and New Zealand Metals (ANZ Metals).

With more than 25 years’ experience in the mining and manufacturing industries, his previous senior leadership positions include director of Patrick Terminals & Logistics Division for Asciano Ltd and coo of Rio Tinto Alcan’s bauxite and alumina division.

Field is succeeded as managing director of ANZ Metals by John Glyde who has been with SMM for over 20 years, working in senior leadership roles across the business in both Australia and the USA. Acting group cfo Amit Patel has been with SMM since 1997 and has nearly 30 years’ experience in finance and accounting; he has been group chief accounting officer since 2008.

SMM’s chairman Geoff Brunsdon has acknowledged Claro’s leadership over the past four years, during which time the company ‘has made substantial progress’, he says.
