Canada’s battery collection scheme Call2Recycle has invested in a ‘groundbreaking’ technology that is says will multiply Ontario’s recycling capacity.
The advanced sorting equipment has been installed at Electronic Distributors International (EDI) facility in the city of Orillia. The line said to be one of only four of its type in the world.
EDI’s new sorting system leverages advanced X-ray technology to precisely identify and sort each battery type even when the individual chemistry or label is unidentifiable.
Output doubled
EDI says it is the only player in North America using this technology, which can process almost 500 kg of used batteries per hour. Call2recycle president Joe Zenobio says this doubles the output of a traditional sorting line.
The investment supports Call2Recycle and EDI’s strategy to invest in ‘competitive battery recycling infrastructure’ to increase efficiency while enhancing safety.
‘At EDI, we are continuously striving to modernise the recycling industry,’ says md Norm Yorke. ‘Our team is excited to be working with Call2Recycle to pioneer technology-driven battery sorting in North America, where innovative solutions drive responsible recycling.’
Since its launch in 1997, Call2Recycle has recycled over 45 000 tonnes of batteries, keeping them out of landfill.
