‘Hundreds of recyclers packed together? Sector would collapse’

The 2021 gathering of Dutch/German/Belgian metal recyclers in Aachen, Germany, has been called off due to Covid-19 restrictions. ‘The risk of infections when bringing 700 metal recyclers together is simply too high and the impact on the industry would be too big,’ says the Dutch metal recyclers federation MRF.

Know as ‘Trefftag’, the event is organised each year in January by industry bodies BDSV, VDM (both Germany), MRF (the Netherlands) and Denuo (Belgium). These four organisations have concluded ‘it  would not be safe to have such major event take place as planned.’

Aachen is located in North Rhine Westphalia in the west of Germany. Currently, it not alllowed to hold big events or events where  the 1,5-metre distance between people can not be guaranteed. ‘Imagine 700 metal recyclers packed together forming an infection source that could well cause a new outbreak of the coronavirus – with a devastating impact on the regional scrap industry. The sector would collapse,’ stresses MRF.
