Europe | Metals group Eramet is taking over the ownership of battery recycler and fellow French company Valdi.
According to Eramet, the deal will enable the group to strengthen its position in the European recycling market. The new acquisition fits with Eramet’s existing oil catalyst activities, an area in which the group is the world leader through its Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corporation subsidiary in the USA.
Formed by AFE in 1997, Valdi specialises in the processing and recycling of non-ferrous metals, with its interests including battery recycling, oil and chemical catalyst recycling and other forms of metals processing. The company employs some 90 people and recorded a turnover of Euro 25 million in 2008.
Eramet’s Chairman and CEO Patrick Buffet comments: ’Recycling is a major growth avenue for the group and enables us to strengthen our sustainable development-related activities. Eramet has a full set of technological skills for optimum recovery of the metals contained in various types of products to be recycled, whether by hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes. The acquisition of Valdi is a very positive development for the group in the recycling field in Europe and an excellent fit with our activities in North America and Sweden.’
Valdi’s Feurs facility in France manufactures ferro-alloys from pre-sorted saline and alkaline batteries and refines alloys to specific customer requirements. In 1999, the acquisition of the Palais-sur-Vienne plant near Limoges, also in France, made it possible to develop resource recovery channels such as manufacturing ferro-alloys in a submerged electrode furnace in which catalysts and waste from special steels production are processed.
Valdi claims to be the only European company to operate industrial facilities which completely integrate the calcining, melting and refining phases. Its two production plants boast an authorised treatment capacity of over 70 000 tonnes per year.
