Cronimet sinks its teeth into gas turbines

Germany – Having begun recycling aircraft turbines in 2016, stainless steel and precious metals recycler Cronimet has now added a new activity and business segment to its portfolio: the dismantling and and processing of gas turbines.

The first such turbine was recycled in late 2017 and a second was scrapped in January this year. Cronimet dismantles the turbines, documents the destruction of the individual parts and returns the secondary raw materials to the processing cycle.

Based at Karlsruhe in south-west Germany, Cronimet’s core business is precious metals recycling. Gas turbines contain metals and various precious alloys which would otherwise be lost without efficient recycling. ‘Both customers and manufacturers attach great importance to the documented destruction and recycling of gas turbines,’ comments Gregor Zenkner, the head of aviation recycling at Cronimet. ‘Our experience in the recycling of aircraft turbines according to air safety standards is an optimal prerequisite for meeting such high requirements.’

Founded in 1980, Cronimet employs over 5000 people at more than 60 locations worldwide.
