Dutch car recycling organisation ARN managed to reuse almost 98.5% (by weight) of end-of-life vehicles last year. ‘This is an amazing achievement,’ the group says.
The automotive recycling sector processed 223 million kg of materials from 207 239 post-consumer cars in 2018. Car dismantling companies contribute around a quarter (24.6%) of the car recycling percentage that is achieved via the ARN scheme.
Shredder companies contribute around 58.5%, in particular through the recovery of various metals from cars which are then delivered to smelting companies either directly or through resellers.
Besides, ARN owns a post-shredder technology plant in the city of Tiel processes upwards of 15% automotive shredder residue. The advanced facility handles over 800 000 kilos of shredder waste, which means that it processes almost 41 000 tons of waste each year. ARN points out that residues are split into twenty raw materials that can be used for new products.
