EMR and RECUPYL target electric vehicle batteries

UK/France – The UK-based recycler EMR has contracted the French player RECUPYL SAS Innovative Battery Recycling to recycle lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) collected throughout the UK.

EMR hopes that the new business agreement will provide it will a fully compliant solution to meet the stringent European Battery Directive targets of a 50% recycling rate by January 2014. The company states that RECUPYL has been recruited due to its industrial capacity to treat significant volumes of lithium-ion batteries.

The French specialist’€™s patented technology of material valorisation at low temperature was also complimented, as this method favours the close loop concept where materials are re-used into batteries. ‘€˜This is a new, but fast evolving opportunity, and we are pleased to be working with Recupyl to provide a service which uses their cutting edge technology to maximise the recycling of electric vehicle batteries,’€™ EMR observes.

At the moment, the UK recycler owns nearly 150 facilities around the world, making it one today’€™s leading authorities on the recycling of a wide array of materials, such as end-of-life vehicles and industrial products.

RECUPYL has specialised in developing and operating processes to recover strategic metals out of waste, the so-called ‘€˜urban mines’€™, with a primary focus on electric batteries. In 2011, it was able to secure a spot on the Global Cleantech 100 list.
